In a strategic move to position Mumbai as a global hub for financial, technological, and policy innovation, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has submitted a formal proposal to establish a new satellite campus in or around the city. The proposal aligns with Maharashtra’s ambitious Viksit Maharashtra 2047 roadmap, aiming to drive economic growth through knowledge-based industries.

A New Campus Focused on Emerging Domains
The proposed satellite campus is designed to offer interdisciplinary programs in finance, economics, data science, technology, law, and public policy. IIM Mumbai’s initiative seeks to create a cutting-edge academic environment that responds dynamically to industry needs, market trends, and policy challenges.
The new campus will offer a range of programs:
Undergraduate courses in digital finance and economic governance
Postgraduate and doctoral research in emerging fields like fintech, data science, and regulatory law
This academic blueprint is crafted in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes innovation, flexibility, and interdisciplinary learning frameworks for India’s higher education sector.
Strategic Location Near Financial Regulatory Institutions
One of the key highlights of the proposal is its strategic plan to situate the campus close to India’s major financial regulatory bodies including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Speaking on the initiative, Professor Manoj K. Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai, said,
"Being in proximity to regulators and financial institutions will give our students unparalleled access to live policy-making, real-time market dynamics, and institutional innovation frameworks. This exposure is vital for grooming future leaders in finance, governance, and technology."
State Government Evaluating Proposal as Part of Educational Reforms
The Department of Higher and Technical Education, Maharashtra, is currently reviewing the proposal. Shailendra Deolankar, Director of Higher Education, confirmed that consultations are ongoing with key stakeholders, including academicians, industry leaders, and public policy experts, to ensure the campus aligns with Maharashtra’s broader education and economic strategies.
The proposal also details a robust financial and infrastructure roadmap, ensuring sustainability and global competitiveness in the long term.
Transforming Mumbai into a Global Education and Innovation Hub
IIM Mumbai envisions this satellite campus as a center of excellence that will enhance the city’s global standing—not just as India’s financial capital but as a premier destination for world-class education, research, and innovation.
The campus is expected to:
Foster a vibrant academic-industry-policy ecosystem
Attract global investors, scholars, and policymakers
Nurture talent for India’s knowledge-driven economy, especially in areas like digital finance, economic governance, and regulatory technology
In its proposal, IIM Mumbai emphasized that this initiative will play a pivotal role in India’s march towards Viksit Bharat 2047, contributing skilled human capital and cutting-edge research to the nation's growth.
