In a landmark move, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has unveiled a comprehensive overhaul of its undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, the first in 12 years. The revamp addresses mounting concerns over student workload, rapidly shifting industry expectations, and the rising importance of hands-on, interdisciplinary learning.

The curriculum was last updated in 2013.

Personalized Learning and Reduced Academic Load

Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee, in an interview with PTI, outlined the motivations and structure of the revamped curriculum. A key change includes reducing class sizes from 300 to 150 for first-year students to ensure more personalized attention. Additionally, the number of core credits per semester has been scaled back, especially during the initial two semesters, to ease academic pressure and promote deeper learning.

Focus on AI, Sustainability, and Future-Readiness

The new curriculum integrates AI tools and sustainability training across disciplines. All BTech students will now undergo mandatory training in responsible and ethical use of AI, and every graduate will receive education in sustainability-related topics, preparing them for current and future global challenges.

Hands-On and Interdisciplinary Approach

The curriculum emphasizes “learning by doing”, with early exposure to departmental labs and projects starting in the first year. A new honours programme and the option to pursue an integrated BTech-MTech degree in five years have been introduced. Students can apply for an MTech in any available discipline at the end of their third year.

Global Benchmarks and New Programmes

A 15-member committee developed the new framework after benchmarking with top global institutions like MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, and leading IITs. The structure allows for greater flexibility and student choice, enabling minors, specializations, and interdisciplinary learning.

From the 2025 academic session, IIT Delhi will introduce:

  • BTech in Design

  • BSc in Chemistry

  • MTech in Photonics

  • Strengthened Industry Connect and Capstone Projects

Postgraduate programmes have also been reshaped. The new MTech-MS (Research) curriculum emphasizes industry engagement, with mandatory capstone projects and summer internships to prepare students for real-world challenges. Students will also have the option to complete their master's thesis within an industry setting, enhancing practical exposure and employability.

Outcome-Oriented Education for a Changing World

“The revised undergraduate program is outcomes-based and flexible,” said Prof. Banerjee. “It blends technical rigor with creativity, ethics, and global awareness. Our goal is to empower students not only to excel in academics but also to innovate and make meaningful contributions to society.”

With this curriculum overhaul, IIT Delhi aims to produce engineers and researchers who are not only industry-ready but also equipped to lead in a fast-evolving, tech-driven world.
